{dining out} Craftworks, Itaewon, Seoul

Seth and I have found our new favorite restaurant. In fact, we have decided that we want to become regulars here. We have been twice so far and plan on going twice next weekend since we have four days for the holiday.

Craftworks is a taphouse and bistro in Itaewon. It is tucked off the sidewalk and opens up to an amazing and quaint garden patio. The restaurant walls are all windows that open up to the garden and the bar opens out to the entire dining areas. On nice days, they open up the walls to create and indoor-outdoor atmosphere. The patio tables are shaded and keep cool. Craftworks is owned by a Canadian ex-pat who brews his own beers here in Korea. Our favorites are the Jirisan Moon Bear IPA and the Halla Golden Ale. We are pretty picky about our IPAs so to say that we like the Jirisan IPA means a lot! As for the Golden Ale, I was first attracted to it by its name... Halla! It's just fun to say.

The first time we went to Craftworks, we went for brunch. They had about a thousand different types of mimosas on the menu, several with fresh fruit juice. The coffee is organic and the food is spectacular. They have a egg benedict with chorizo! (I was smitten!)

The next time we visited Craftworks, it was for lunch. And I have to say that I prefer the lunch menu. We drank a lot of beers that day so I can say that we have sufficiently taste tested our favorites! Then we got to the food menu. First the homemade tortilla chips with chipotle spinach dip. This ranks number one. Just amazing. Then we had cheeseburger sliders with munster cheese. The bun was the best part, buttery and fresh! Then we split a chorizo sandwich. And you know I love anything with chorizo!

I didn't want lunch to end. It was too good. They had apple pie and red velvet cake on the dessert menu. I have to remember not to eat too much before it's time for dessert next weekend!

tomato and avocado wrap

Hot weather calls for quick and cool meals that won't make you feel even more uncomfortable than heat has already made you. This tomato and avocado wrap is crisp, sweet, fresh, and buttery. It is also quick and easy which is a plus when you need to get back to the pool! Recipe after the jump.

tomato and garlic mussels with bacon

One of my most favorite memories from mine and Seth's relationship was our weekend to Savannah in November of 2008. We had only been dating about a month and this was our first trip together. It was kind of a big deal! Anyone who has been to Savannah, Georgia knows that it is awesome so having a good time wasn't a huge concern. But you know when you are at those milestones in your relationship things can get a little stressful.

It was November so the weather was cooler but pleasant. It was Veterans Day weekend so we had a four day weekend. Our hotel was right on the river and in the middle of everything. We spent the first day exploring Forsythe Park and the famous fountain, I drug him to a couple of stores for some shopping, and we climbed on some of the boats at the pier. This is still one of my all time favorite photos of us... I keep it in a little jeweled frame in the kitchen to keep me company!

That night we discovered two things: 1. You can buy beer to-go at the bar and walk along the river with it. and 2. Savannah has some amazing seafood. Both are awesome discoveries!! So we grabbed our first beer at the top of the street and set out on our search for dinner. After about 4 beers, we were starving and we ended up at this seafood restaurant. It was just our style. Causal with wooden tables and benches. Nets and fish hanging from the ceiling. And more beer on tap!

This was a family style place that served buckets (literally!) of seafood. We picked three: crawfish, mussels, and oysters. I did not care for the crawfish. There was a lot of work involved for very little reward and I felt like I was dissecting red cockroaches the whole time. So Seth worked on that bucket himself. I loved the oysters but Seth didn't much care for the texture. The mussels are what united us at the table. Relationship success! I don't remember exactly how they were prepared but I do remember the good feeling we had across that table surrounded by wet naps and empty shells. I knew we were falling in love.

Now we are almost three years into our relationship and we are still bonding over food! Last night we enjoyed a steaming pot of mussels flavored with tomatoes, garlic, and everybody's favorite, bacon. I think the best part was sopping up the juices with the sweet garlic bread from the bakery up the street. The whole meal took about 10 minutes from start to finish. And since I took the pan to the table, it is truly a one-pot dinner. So pour yourself a beer and grab your sweetie and dig into your bucket of love!

fennel pasta ~your go-to dinner~

Anyone who is responsible for feeding someone (and that someone could be yourself) has those dished in their culinary kit bag that they can use for last minute meals, long day dinners, or when your creative juices just aren't flowing. Pasta happens to be my "thing". It is my go-to meal that I know I can do and that I know I can do well.

My pasta dishes are more like a technique rather than a recipe. They can be molded to my mood and my inventory. As it happened, I had some fennel I had to use. So I reached into my pasta memory and recalled this wonderful fennel pasta my BFF Mary Catherine has made for me a couple of times. I couldn't quite remember every detail about her pasta, but I remembered the basics: fennel, pasta, tomato paste. The rest just fell into place.

If you want to play a little choose-your-own-adventure with this recipe, you can leave out the tomato paste and have an olive oil sauce. You could also add some Italian sausage or shrimp. Or throw in something green like spinach or kale. You can also change the type of noodle that you use. Just have fun with it! Remember, you shouldn't take cooking too seriously anyways!
